FRESNO, Calif. – A promising start to the regular season finale unfortunately ended with a sour taste as the Concordia Golden Eagles battled the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds on Saturday evening.
An opportunistic Andy Jun scored early in the first half to give CUI a 1-0 lead. A congested box in the 12th minute saw Bryan Maldonado get a shot off with multiple defenders in the vicinity and Jun quickly shot again on the doorstep to push the ball past the line.
The Sunbirds tied the game before halftime and later took a 3-1 lead midway into the second half. The Golden Eagles clawed their way back into the contest with a sweet connection shortly after a throw-in by Jad Othman. The ball bounced to Gianluca Giumaraes who was able to juggle the ball briefly before sending a solid cross across the box. It found Ryan Smith who neatly placed it into the net to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Concordia earned ten corner kicks and had multiple chances throughout the rest of regulation but FPU was able to strike again for an important insurance goal. Then in the 90th minute an unfortunate bad bounce went in to the Concordia net as an own goal to round out the scoring at 5-2 in favor of the host Sunbirds.
CUI entered Saturday second in the PacWest standings and finishes conference play with 15 points. The Golden Eagles still have a chance to make the PacWest Conference Tournament but there are still a ton of teams that have at least one or two more matches remaining this coming week.
CUI will have to sit back and see how everything unfolds and if things break the right way, CUI would qualify if those 15 points keep them in the Top 4 slots. Point Loma has the inside track atop the table to win the regular season title and No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and there is a key match looming between Menlo and Vanguard that has implications on how everything shake out for those four postseason slots.

If the Golden Eagles do qualify for the conference tournament, the PacWest semifinals will be played at Westmont in Santa Barbara on Thursday, Nov. 13 with the PacWest Championship Game that Saturday, Nov. 15 at the same venue. The women’s soccer tournament will be hosted by Point Loma.
Regardless of what happens the Golden Eagles conclude the regular season with an 8-7-1 overall record. Under the leadership of first year head coach Joshua Glover, Concordia won eight games for the first time since 2019, which is the most in the past six seasons, and finished the regular season campaign with a winning record. Among the many fantastic memories has to be the recent 7-0 road win over their rivals from Biola, which set the program record for most goals in a single match in the D2 era.
