Yellowknife Tennis Club hopes to build a new clubhouse before the next summer season after agreeing an updated land lease with City Hall.
The club announced the deal this week.
Catherine Dixon, the club’s general manager, said the need for a new, larger clubhouse had become apparent years ago.
“The current one is about 20 years old, and it’s not quite big enough for how big our membership has gotten,” Dixon told Cabin Radio.
“When we ran summer camps for youth, if we had a rainy day and we weren’t able to spend the day on the courts, our current clubhouse was quite small for everybody to be inside, and it’s quite dated.”
The club’s membership has been steadily growing, Dixon added.
For most of the past year, she said, the club and city have worked together to identify how the lease agreement should change to accommodate a larger facility.
“The city has been fantastic,” said Dixon. “We’re going to get a new clubhouse hopefully before the next season starts. Next year is the plan.”
Dixon expects a lot of work to happen next April and May to make the new building a reality in time for the summer. This year, for example, the summer season began slightly ahead of schedule on May 20 (sessions take place at the city’s fieldhouse over the winter).
Meanwhile, the Yellowknife Tennis Club will hold its annual general meeting from 7pm on November 26 at the Sport North building.
