Idukki: A newborn calf born near Mattupetty in Munnar on Saturday is in critical condition. Though the wild elephant that gave birth to it is healthy, the calf has been unable to stand. The calf was found lying near the riverside close to Top Station.

Due to its weakened state, a Rapid Response Team (RRT) was deployed to closely monitor the mother and calf. Another adult elephant is seen standing guard near them, showing protective behaviour. The rescue efforts are being hampered by the region’s heavy rain. However, the Forest Department has initiated an emergency response to provide medical care to the animal.
