CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois soccer (10-6-3, 4-4-1) saw their 2025 season end on Sunday when they fell 2-1 in overtime against the fourth-seeded Illinois State (7-6-7, 4-2-4) in the Missouri Valley Conference quarterfinals.

How it Happened
First Half
Illinois State brought the pressure early, putting up three shots-on-goal in the first 23 minutes of action, but Murray stood tall and stopped every attempt. It was then time for the Salukis to bring the pressure, putting up two shots-on-goal that were saved.
Finally, at the 34:46 mark, Schlicklin broke through and potted the game’s opening goal after cleaning up a rebound from the right post. With SIU up 1-0, the first-half clock ticked down to zero to send the teams to the break.
Second Half
SIU came out and quickly put another shot-on-goal up, but it was saved by the Redbirds’ keeper. Illinois State then found the equalizer just under 14 minutes into the half, finishing on a second opportunity after Murray made her fourth save of the game.
Following the tying goal, and a goalie swap for SIU, both teams struggled to put the ball on frame. Miller made her first save at the 79:58 mark, but, despite some golden opportunities for the Redbirds, neither team could find the go-ahead goal before the 90th minute ended, sending the game to overtime knotted up 1-1.
Overtime
It did not take long for Illinois State to find the game-winning goal, scoring less than three minutes into the overtime period, ending SIU’s season with a 2-1 loss in the MVC quarterfinals.
