Former Portland State quarterback Davis Alexander guided the Montreal Alouettes to a 42-33 win over Winnipeg to open the Canadian Football League playoffs on Saturday.

Alexander found Tyson Philpot on a 45-yard touchdown strike to put Montreal in command 17-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Winnipeg rushed back with three quick scores to take a 27-25 lead late in the third quarter. But Alexander hit Austin Mack for 50 yards to set up a short touchdown run to push Montreal back into the lead to stay.

Leading 39-33 heading down the stretch, Alexander got loose on an 18-yard scramble and a first down to help set up a short field goal in the final minute to secure the win.

Alexander finished the game completing 24-of-34 passes for 384 yards, while also rushing for 32 yards and a touchdown.

The former Viking signal-caller stretched his CFL record to 12 consecutive wins to begin his CFL career.

Montreal (11-8) plays at Hamilton in the Eastern Final at Noon on Saturday.
