Nov. 5 (UPI) — Police in Ireland investigating a viral video of a “lion” on the loose in the woods of eastern County Clare discovered the animal was in fact a Newfoundland dog “with a fresh haircut.”
Gardaà stationed in Killaloe opened an investigation after a video captured by a truck driver showed what appeared to be an African lion wandering in the woods.
John O’Reilly, the local forst manager, said the video came after several reported sightings of an unknown animal in the woods.
“The animal had been seen before by harvesters working on the site, but it was from a distance, moving through the trees. We assumed it was a deer before the video was captured,” O’Reilly told CorkBeo.
Gardaà said on social media Tuesday that the animal had been found and identified.
“Turns out it was just a very committed Newfoundland dog with a fresh haircut,” police wrote on social media.
Gardaà officials wrote the “very friendly” dog is named Mouse and “is delighted with his recent viral video clip.”
