The safety car driver was just finishing the job.
Here’s something you don’t see every… well, ever. During Sunday’s NASCAR Mexico championship race, a safety car somehow managed to ram into a competitor’s already crashed car.
The bizarre incident occurred during the season finale at the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed. During the race, Santiago Tovar, the driver of the No. 22 Quaker State Ford, lost control and got stuck in a tire barrier.
While waiting for help to extricate his race car from the tires, a safety car sped toward the scene, supposedly to make sure he was okay. And it didn’t stop until it barreled head-on, right into Tovar’s race car.
After ramming Tovar’s right front fender, the safety car driver was able to back his vehicle out of the secondary crash he had caused. Luckily, neither he nor Santiago Tovar was injured in the strange smash-up.
As for the race itself, Rubén Rovelo was the winner of the Puebla 110. Alex de Alba, who finished fourth in the event, was also crowned the 2025 NASCAR Mexico Series Champion.
While Rovelo and de Alba received many congratulations following the NASCAR Mexico season finale, it was the unusual scene involving the safety car that dominated social media discussion. The video of the crash has now been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on TikTok alone.
“Here comes the UNSAFETY CAR,” one fan joked alongside the video of the safety car slamming into Tovar’s disabled vehicle.
“I had no idea Lance Stroll had another part-time job!” another fan joked, referring to the oft-beleaguered Formula One driver.
“Did they need another doctor for the doctor?” another viewer asked.
“I’m not clear on whether he went to help or to finish the job,” someone else wondered.
