Davis Alexander, the No. 2-ranked passer in Portland State history, will play for the Grey Cup next weekend after guiding Montreal to a 19-16 win at Hamilton in the CFL Eastern Final on Saturday.
Montreal never trailed in the game, taking a 13-3 lead when Alexander hit Tyler Snead for a 28-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half.
Hamilton came back to tie the score 16-16 on a field goal with 1:47 to play.
But Montreal got the ball back, and Alexander hit Charleston Rambo on a pair of quick strikes over the middle to move the ball into field-goal position, and Jose Maltos booted the winning kick from 45 yards out as time expired.
Alexander completed 19-of-26 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown, while also leading the Alouettes in rushing with seven carries for 64 yards.
Alexander is in his fourth season in Montreal and was a backup on the Alouettes 2023 Grey Cup championship team.
Alexander has moved into the starting lineup since and has won a league record 13 starts to begin his career. He has endured a couple stints on the injured reserve list during that stretch.
Montreal (12-8) will face Saskatchewan (13-6) in the Grey Cup at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16.
