Destiny 2 morale is not exactly high heading into the game’s Star Wars-themed Renegades expansion, but a new batch of reveals from Bungie about what’s heading to the game looks pretty good. One thing in particular is one of the best additions I’ve seen to the game in years. Tiered gear? The Portal? No, give me Universal Exotic Ornaments.
Bungie is now opening up the ability to allow pieces of gear to use any exotic ornament in that slot on each class. Previously, if you had say, Synthoceps, you would be limited to the handful of ornaments for that exotic armor. Now, you can use any ornament across any piece of exotic Titan arm armor. In this case, that is a full 16 different exotics with I don’t even know how many ornaments across them. It’s a lot. You are probably now getting 10x more customization options for each slot, potentially. This also has the ability to solve the problem of extremely ugly pieces of armor that either have few or zero ornaments (Peregrine Greaves) to have loads of options now.
To answer an inevitable follow-up question, Bungie has said that these ornaments will not show up in PvP, and they will use the defaults instead. That’s because you really want to know what an enemy team is using without being confused that it looks like something else. Some are complaining that in PvE, this messes up inspection, but all you really have to do is hover over the exotic for half a second to see what it “really” is. It’s worth the trade-off.
One sort of funny catch here is that exotic class items get screwed because there is only one exotic class item with a few ornaments. Nothing is shared across a bunch of them.

For those saying that instead, exotics should be able to use all ornaments, including legendary ones, which is well over 100 per slot. I mean, I get it, but I also cannot fault Bungie for wanting to, you know, actually still make some amount of money here. You need to own these ornaments to use them across the slot, but now you are at least getting way more value out of them because they apply to every piece you own. I don’t think prices are going up for them either (they better not, read the room).
As someone who loves Destiny 2 fashion, this is a great change. Again, my favorite change the game has made in years, even if it’s cosmetic-based. Name a better one! No, you’re wrong, this one wins.
