Somehow we don’t think Aztec Batman will have the same “No Killing” rule as his comics forebear. Warner Bros. Animation released the trailer for Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires during San Diego Comic-Con 2025, and it’s taking Batman to new places. Specifically, the court of King Moctezuma II. The titular Aztec Batman is Yohualli Coatl, whose father is murdered by Hernán Cortés. Which makes real life historical monster Hernán Cortés this universe’s Joe Chill. (And also Two-Face, after he’s scarred by Aztec Catwoman). Yohualli Coatl dedicates his life to becoming the ultimate warrior and vowing to take down Cortés and the invading Spanish army. Here’s hoping for an Inglorious Basterds-style alternate history ending.
Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and Mexican animation studio Ánima. Besides the aforementioned Aztec Batman, Catwoman, and Two-Face, we see Mesoamerican versions of Alfred, Poison Ivy, and the Joker. The film will get a theatrical release in Mexico, as well as coming to HBO Max worldwide, September 18, 2025.
