SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) – For the fifth year in a row, the University of Wisconsin-Superior hosted the Superior Open tennis tournament.
The three-day event welcomes tennis players across all ages and skill levels and includes Yellowjackets men’s and women’s tennis players as well.
The Superior Open is a United States Tennis Association (USTA) certified event and is a level six tennis tournament.
Yellowjackets tennis head coach CeeJay Schaffner says it’s a great event to bring tennis enthusiasts from across the Twin Ports to the same court.
“It’s just been a really good get together for the tennis community up here in the Northland. It has been tons of fun to provide that opportunity for our juniors and our adults,” said Schaffner.
The extreme heat this weekend did not stop the competitors from hitting the court and Schaffner says the tennis community in Duluth and Superior welcome the weather.
“We just don’t want winter, right? Anytime it’s hot up here, we appriciate it. The big thing is rain, we don’t have a lot of outdoor opportunities so whenever we can get outside and play and just cross our fingers and hope for no rain, that’s ideal,” said Schaffner.
The Yellowjackets men’s tennis team is coming off of their fourth straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) championship while the women’s tennis team appeared in the 2025 NCAA Tournament this past spring.
