Renters in Canada are increasingly looking to Halifax as their next home.

That’s according to new data from RentCafe.com where Halifax places second for most sought after rental markets.

In creating the list, Rentcafe.com analyzes available listings, listing views, apartments saved as favourites, and saved personalized searches for 25 Canadian cities. Values for these variables are combined to get a score out of 100.

Halifax received an overall score of 99.89 for the third quarter of 2025, second only to Moncton, N.B. which had a perfect score.

According to the data, page views for listings in Halifax rose 45 per cent from the same period in 2024. Favourited listings surged 241 per cent.

Halifax has become an attractive market for its growing economy and job opportunities. Year-over-year there has been a steady growth in total employment of those over the age of 15.

But prices in Halifax still make some weary of the move. At the end of 2021, the average rent for a one bedroom was $1,602, according to Rentals.ca. By the end of 2022, that number jumped 24 per cent to $1,987, before decreasing 7.4 per cent to $1,841 in December 2023.

According to the Government of Nova Scotia, the average rent in Halifax for a one-bedroom in the first quarter of 2025 was $1,770 per month. That is significantly higher than other cities in the Maritimes.

The average monthly rent for a one bedroom in the first quarter in Moncton, St. John, Fredricton and St. John’s was approximately $1,257.
