The Toronto Blue Jays selected the contract of pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann on Tuesday, preventing him from being exposed in the Rule 5 Draft.
The move brings the Jays’ 40-player roster to 38. Players signed at 19 or older who are not added to a team’s 40-man within four seasons can be selected by another team in the Rule 5 Draft, held annually each December.
The 23-year-old left-hander did not pitch this past season while recovering from Tommy John surgery performed in July of 2024. He is expected to be healthy to begin 2026.
He is the No. 4-ranked Jays prospect according to MLB.com, behind starter Trey Yesavage and shortstops Arjun Nimmala and JoJo Parker.
Tiedemann struggled in eight outings spread out across three minor-league levels during the 2024 season before going under the knife. He had a 3.68 ERA in 15 starts the year before and has a 3.02 ERA in 41 minor-league outings for his career.
A native of Long Beach, Calif., Tiedemann was selected in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
