Devin Haney will attempt to become a three-weight world champion when he takes on fellow American and WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr.
Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) moved up to the 147-pound division with a forgettable points win over Jose Carlos Ramirez in May.
That was the 27-year-old’s first outing since his controversial clash with Ryan Garcia last year.Â
Garcia behaved in a troublingly erratic fashion before the bout and weighed in more than three pounds over the super-lightweight limit. He hurt Haney repeatedly with left hooks and dropped him three times before earning a majority decision win.
However, after the fight, Garcia failed a drug test and the result was officially changed to a “no contest”.Â
There were suggestions of Haney looking a little gun-shy against Ramirez and, if demons remain from his Garcia ordeal, Norman (28-0, 22 KOs) is a man primed to take advantage.
The 24-year-old from Georgia is an established welterweight carrying knockout power, as evidenced by his brutal victory on the road against Japan’s Jin Sasaki last time out.
The Sporting News will update live results from the Ring IV: Night of Champions card in Riyadh and provide a full report of Norman vs. Haney here.
