CHMR Hosting Series of Fundraisers to Keep Station Running

CHMR, the Memorial University campus radio station, is launching a series of fundraisers to help keep their operations going.

The station, which mostly consists of volunteers, has been around in various forms since 1951.

In that time the station has played a vital role in giving local artists and community groups a platform, as well as in training broadcasters who would become staples of the province’s media landscape.

CHMR News Director Colleen Power says fundraising has always been a part of the way CHMR is run.

She says everything is more expensive these days and they are just trying to keep the station going.

She says they are going to do a couple of money-raising efforts a year to keep their operations going, noting they need a “bit of a boost.”

The station’s first one is a celebrity karaoke event. It is taking place at the Breezeway next Thursday, December 4th.

VOCM’s own Russell Bowers and Richard Duggan, who are CHMR alumni, will be participating.
