Women’s basketball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. It seems to be the next big thing for investors, with the WNBA adding expansion teams almost every season. And they aren’t the only league around either; a major rival just acquired Sophie Cunningham.

The Unrivaled League had its inaugural season last year and will see massive participation from the W’s stars this year. And another league, known so far as ‘Project B’, has also been making moves. Cunningham, who plays for the Indiana Fever, just became their latest addition.

Project B has planned a late 2026 start to their basketball enterprise. The idea is to have an international women’s league playing across multiple cities. They have already signed players like Nneka Ogwumike, Jonquel Jones, and Alyssa Thomas, to name a few.

The salaries on offer for WNBA stars are meaningful, with Project B reportedly willing to pay up to $2 million. This is without taking into account the fact that they are willing to offer equity in the league to players who join early. It’s not surprising that Cunningham has been enticed.

Initially, at the very least, Project B will not clash with the W. This will allow players to participate in both without trouble. With the CBA issues currently an issue, though, their growth should be something the WNBA is wary of.

Cunningham has exploded onto the scene recently and will bring even more eyeballs to this new project. Her involvement will also bring questions about Caitlin Clark, whose participation would make the biggest difference.
