The Finch West LRT is set to officially open in less than two weeks, finally linking communities in northwest Toronto to a much-anticipated rapid transit line.
According to the TTC, the line will launch on Dec. 7 with a soft opening, operating from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. until spring 2026.
This will mark Toronto’s newest transit line in more than 20 years, since the opening of Line 4 in 2002.
While Torontonians have waited over two decades for a new rapid transit option, several transit projects currently underway mean that another new line won’t be far behind.

EGLINTON CROSSTOWN LRT
The long- awaited Eglinton Crosstown LRT could be the next rapid transit line to open in Toronto, and that could even be within the coming next few weeks. The line, also known as Line 5, will stretch 19 kilometres from Mount Dennis Station in the west to Kennedy Station in the east. The line is currently undergoing its revenue service demonstration test, one of the final tests before opening. The TTC has started updating maps on the subway system to include Line 5, an opening date has not been confirmed but Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay says a 2025 opening is still possible.

According to Metrolinx, plans are already underway to extend the line to Pearson International Airport in partnership with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority.
YONGE NORTH SUBWAY EXTENSION
The Yonge North Subway Extension will extend Toronto’s Line 1 north into York Region, connecting riders to the cities of Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill. Stretching eight kilometers, this extension will create five new stops at Steeles, Clark, Royal Orchard, Bridge, and terminating at High Tech in Richmond Hill. In July, Metrolinx announced it had awarded a contract for tunneling to North End Connectors. A completion date is anticipated for 2029.
