Orchard Long-Term Care Home in Pickering is being redeveloped and expanded to create a new long-term care facility.

The new 15-storey facility will be built on the southwest portion of the job site and will include 320 new long-term beds.

Once that building is completed, an additional two or three mid-rise residential buildings will be built where Orchard Villa currently stands.

Some of the units within the new buildings will serve as affordable housing units for frontline healthcare workers that work on-site.

In total, the goal is to have 832 long-term care beds and 670 retirement units.

Residents in the area may notice construction activity on or around the site, including fencing, equipment and construction vehicles.

The development was not initiated or endorsed by the city of Pickering, it was approved by the Province under its long-term care expansion framework.

The city had no role in the decision-making process, outside of the building permit process ensuring safe construction.
