A man was shot dead on Friday near a Surrey mall, and investigators are urging the public to let them know if they have any information.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is now investigating the shooting, naming the victim as 26-year-old Jaskaran Birring from Chilliwack, B.C.

RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) responded to reports of a shooting at around 11:40 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, in the area of 152nd Street and 104th Avenue, which is just steps away from Guildford Town Centre.
“Responding officers located a male suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving measures, the man died at the scene,” IHIT said in a release.
“IHIT has taken conduct of this investigation and continues to work in partnership with the SPOSU, the Surrey Police Service (SPS), the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service.”
IHIT says that Birring had previous interactions with police and was known to be involved in the Lower Mainland drug trade.
“Early indications suggest this was a targeted incident related to organized crime. Investigators are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the homicide and to identify all parties involved,” IHIT added.
Around 15 minutes after the shooting, a white Dodge Ram pickup truck was discovered engulfed in flames in an area about a 10-minute drive away from where the shooting took place.
The incident closely resembles another shooting that took place at another mall early last month. In early November, officers responded to reports of a shooting near Metrotown. A man was found dead, and a car was discovered engulfed in flames nearby.
“IHIT investigators are seeking information and video evidence from any witnesses who may have been at either location on Nov. 28 between 9 p.m. and midnight. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is urged to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.”
