Canadian quarterback Tre Ford’s time in an Edmonton Elks uniform could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
While talking with 880 CHED’s Dave Campbell, Elks’ vice president of football operations and general manager Ed Hervey was non-committal on Ford’s future with the franchise.
“We haven’t had a chance to talk with Tre or his agent. With respect to how it goes, when you make this level of a commitment, it has to be something that both sides have to be willing to work and compromise, obviously there’s a financial impact there as well,” said Hervey
“As I stated earlier this year, sometimes the opportunities may be elsewhere, and we’ll have to look at that as a situation if it’s a case that works for Tre. He’s got a ton of ability, but sometimes a fresh start is the best start for some guys in this business. He’s been nothing but a great pro here, but in the business of football, it sometimes doesn’t allow for everything to work out the way you would hope or expect.”
Ford’s 2025 season was less than ideal despite entering the year as the No.1 on the depth chart. The 27-year-old started the first five games of the year for Edmonton, going 1-4 in those contests. On the year, the Niagara Falls, Ont. native finished with 984 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, while adding 152 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
In his four seasons with the Elks, the former first-round pick has registered 4,651 yards, 29 touchdowns, 19 interceptions and a 67.2 completion percentage through the air and 1,129 yards and four touchdowns as a runner.
Among the 14 passers who threw at least 100 times, Ford’s completion percentage (67.8), completion percentage on throws of 20-plus yards (37.5), and efficiency rate (95.9) sit in the bottom five.
This comes after the Elks re-signed pending free agent quarterback Cody Fajardo to a one-year deal for the 2026 season.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound pivot took over for Ford in Week 8, posting a 6-7 record as a starter during the final 13 games of the season.
As the Elks starting QB, the 33-year-old completed 73.2 per cent of his passes — second in the CFL to Saskatchewan’s Trevor Harris — for 3,408 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Brea, Calif. native also added 319 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, with his 21 total touchdowns the most by Fajardo since the 2022 season.
“Cody Fajardo’s contract extension underscores our commitment to stability and progress, positioning the team for an exciting and promising 2026 season,” Hervey said in a statement.
In his 141-game CFL career, Fajardo has amassed 21,406 passing yards, 2,810 rushing yards, and 148 total touchdowns.
