He may still be Winnipeg’s arm of the future, but Canadian draft pick Taylor Elgersma’s feet remain planted in the NFL, at least on a tryout basis.

Elgersma worked out for the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, eight days after he showed off his skills to the San Francisco 49ers.

The 23-year-old was the Bombers’ second-round draft pick earlier this year.

The 6-foot-5, 227-pound quarterback won the Hec Crighton as the top player in Canadian university football in 2024, leading Wilfrid Laurier to an appearance in the Vanier Cup.

Elgersma’s agent, Fred Weinrauch, who on Tuesday confirmed the Chicago workout, said last month his client wants to exhaust all his NFL opportunities before coming to the CFL.

“If that time comes, he would be happy to sign with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers,” Weinrauch said in November.

Elgersma was released by Green Bay after attending their 2025 training camp.

His final university season (2024) saw him complete 73.8% of his passes for 4,252 yards, with 35 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

He also ran 49 times for 245 yards and seven touchdowns, an average of 5.0 yards per rush and was named the U Sports athlete of the year.

Bombers GM Kyle Walters called Elgersma a “unique” prospect, given his skills and nationality.

“You see a lot of players with physical ability, but he comes up here with a whole pedigree of Canadian football, which is a little bit different,” Walters said in November. “He runs hard, he’s big, he’s athletic, he can zing the ball. He’s got it all.”

Add Vaval to NFL watch list

Another player getting significant off-season attention from the NFL is Bombers kick returner and CFL rookie-of-the-year Trey Vaval.

The latest team reportedly giving Vaval a look-see is Minnesota.

That workout this week comes on the heels of looks from the New York Jets, New Orleans and Cleveland, as the 25-year-old tries to parlay his electrifying 2024 campaign into a bigger payday south of the border.

Vaval scored a CFL-best four kick-return touchdowns in his first year in Canada, adding 21 tackles and an interception in limited action on defence.

The native of Blue Springs, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City, walked away from the CFL awards night with the trophies as top rookie and best special-teams player.
