Montreal has locked up its guy under centre.

The Alouettes extended starting quarterback Davis Alexander to a one-year contract that keeps him in Montreal through 2028, the team announced on Tuesday.

“We both wanted to get something done. I know I want to be here for a really, really, really long time,” Alexander told reporters. “I love this city, love this organization.”

“It just made sense. Still kind of kept a team-friendly deal and we were able to still keep a lot of the guys that make us successful,” he added. “It also proves that, if there was any doubt, there’s no other place I’d rather be.”

The Alouettes signed Alexander to a three-year extension last off-season, and later traded veteran and 2023 Grey Cup MVP Cody Fajardo to Edmonton.

Alexander led the Alouettes to the Grey Cup this past season, where they came up short against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Alexander threw three interceptions against Saskatchewan, completing 22 of 34 pass attempts.

Alexander battled injuries throughout the season and into the playoffs, only playing eight regular-season games, going undefeated in his seven starts. On the year, he threw 2024 yards, completing 72.5 per cent of his passes.

The 27-year-old Washington native went undrafted out of Portland State in 2022, and joined the Alouettes that season. Alexander won the Grey Cup with the Als in 2023, backing up Fajardo.

“We’re thrilled that we were able to come to an agreement on an extension with Davis and his camp,” Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia said in a statement. We’re excited to see where he’ll lead us over the next few years.”
