The Edmonton Oilers are bringing up reinforcements to help with a slew of injuries up front.
Both Jack Roslovic and Connor Clattenburg have been placed on the IR, and the Oilers have opted to call up NHL veteran Max Jones from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors. The 27-year-old Jones has five goals and 7 points through 17 AHL games this season, and will likely come up to help replace some of the energy that Clattenburg brought down on the fourth line.
On top of calling up Jones, it appears more bad news has hit the Jake Walman situation, as the Oilers placed the defenceman on LTIR.

Jones was acquired by the Oilers from the Boston Bruins ahead of last year’s trade deadline as a piece in the Trent Frederic deal. He appeared in 19 regular-season games with Edmonton last season, scoring a goal and two points in that span. Jones did not play a single game during the Oilers’ run to the Stanley Cup Final.
He was expected to push for a roster spot in training camp, but would be placed on waivers shortly before the season began, going unclaimed.
It is a bit of a curious decision to bring up Jones when he seems to have struggled to produce at the AHL level this season. There are plenty of other, more interesting options that could have gotten the call, including red-hot offensive forwards like Ike Howard and Quinn Hutson.
Offseason additions like Josh Samanski and Roby Jarventie have also been enjoying good starts to the AHL season. All four of those players would make more relative sense to get a chance to play NHL games over Jones.
One reason for this may be that Jones does have plenty more NHL experience than those players, and Edmonton may be looking for more of a gritty, energy guy in the bottom of the lineup rather than an offensive punch.
It’s unclear whether or not he will be in the lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.
