It’s no secret that success in the CFL begins with the strength of your quarterback room. For the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2025, that came down to Trevor Harris and Jake Maier. And Maier didn’t always know that quarterbacking was in his future.

“I was a baseball player growing up, and it was one of those things I got into high school and my dad was like, you need to play football, it’s mandatory. We’ve held you out as a youth. He was like, You have to play football. He wanted me to play basketball; he wanted me to play everything. It was my first day at freshman tryouts, and we were broken into groups: DBs over here, linemen over here, running backs, receivers, whatever. And quarterbacks over here. And the receiver line had like 20 guys. The quarterback line had two. I’m just a probability. Well, if I want a chance to make the team, at worst, I’m going to be the third-team quarterback. I can handle that. So, I just started throwing the ball that day, and I threw it like a baseball for the longest time. And then eventually it was like, okay, I think I can actually do this.”
