Charley Hull, Michael Brennan on the course-record 55 at Grant Thornton
Charley Hull and Michael Brennan, who just got paired up four days ago, shot a Grant Thornton-record 55 on Friday at Tiburon.
Golf’s silly season rolls on and this week, it’s a fun one, with the 2025 Grant Thornton Invitational.
For the third year in a row, 16 teams, each featuring one LPGA golfer paired up with a PGA Tour golfer, will hit the links at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida.
Friday saw not one but two twosomes go low. Get the lowdown here.
Moments after the Charley Hull-Michael Brennan duo talked about their 17-under 55 round at Tiburon on Friday, Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark matched them and tied for the first-round lead.
Thompson/Clark posted two eagles, 13 birdies and two pars, just like Hull-Brennan did, although on a different combination of holes. The second Thompson/Clark eagle came after a 2 on the par-4 10th hole. Their first was on the par-5 sixth just like Hull/Brennan.
“I feel like we ham-and-egged it pretty well out there. He played some amazing golf and holed out a bunker shot and stuck it close on a few holes. We really just fed off each other,” Thompson said.
The team equaled the back-nine scoring mark of 27.
The pairing of Charley Hull and Michael Brennan, which just came together on Monday after Daniel Berger withdrew torched Tiburon on Friday, recording two eagles, 13 birdies and two pars en route to a 17-under 55.
The duo opened birdie-par before three straight birdies. On the par-5 sixth, the two made their first eagle. That was followed by seven straight birdies and then a second eagle, on the par-5 14th.
“I thought we had 20 under in us,” Hull said after the round, which goes down as the course record in this event.
The pair set a birdie-eagle record at the event by going 15 under on Nos. 3-15. Their front-nine 27 matched the tournament mark, set three times previously.

The two 55s beat the previous scoring mark in the scramble format at the GTI by a shot. Nelly Korda and Tony Finau teamed up for a 56 two years ago.

The Novak-Coughlin pair made the turn in 29 with seven birdies and two pars on the opening nine. After four straight birdies on the back (giving them eight consecutie birdies overall), they have taken the outright lead at 11 under through 13 holes.
The Chris Gotterup/Jennifer Kupcho duo is tied for second at 10 under. Also tied for second is Charley Hull and Michael Brennan, a pairing that only came together on Monday after Brennan got in the field when Daniel Berger WD’d.
The duo of Gotterup/Kupcho is off to a blazing start in Tiburon, making birdie on their first nine holes. That makes for a front-nine 29 and a 9-under start for a one-shot lead. They would then birdie No. 10 to make it 10-for-10. That tied the tournament mark of 10 in a row.
Andrew Novak and Lauren Coughlin aren’t far behind at 8 under through 10.
