A strengthening low pressure system hanging over Newfoundland could bring hurricane-force gusts to parts of the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas, and further snowfall for much of the island into Tuesday morning.

“It is a mess of a storm. Everybody’s seeing something different, that’s what’s making this a bit complicated,” CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler said Tuesday afternoon.

An orange-level wind warning continues for the Avalon and the Bonavista peninsulas.

Brauweiler said winds could reach as high as 140 km/h between midnight and early Tuesday morning.

That will bring blizzard conditions to areas with snow and a risk for power outages.

Parts of the southern Avalon are also under a wind warning, as gusts could reach between 110 km/h and 120 km/h.

A coastal flooding statement is in effect for parts of the northeast coast of the island from Green Bay to the Avalon. The area could see waves between seven and nine metres, with high tide between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. NT on Tuesday.

“The potential for some coastal flooding definitely exists along the northeast coast,” Brauweiler said.

Much of western and northern Newfoundland, along with southern Labrador, remain under a yellow-level winter storm warning. Those areas could see between 10 and 15 cm of additional snowfall paired with winds between 70 and 80 km/h.

More snow is expected in parts of central Newfoundland. Between 15 and 20 cm of snow is expected with winds gusting to 120 km/h. The Green Bay area could see upwards of 20 cm with blizzard-like conditions.

Many schools across the Avalon, central and western regions either delayed opening, or were closed for the morning or for the whole day.

The Supreme Court in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor also closed for the day due to weather and are expected to open Tuesday.

Bell Island ferry crossings were cancelled Monday morning and all Marine Atlantic ferries to Port aux Basques and North Sydney were been cancelled.
