After seeing a two-goal lead disappear in the final 25 minutes of regulation, the Washington Huskies regained their footing and won the NCAA men’s soccer championship less than two minutes into overtime Monday night.

Harrison Bertos, a junior from Bedford, Mass., took a pass from Egor Akulov and knocked it in from the left side of the 6-yard box to give the unseeded Huskies their first men’s soccer title with a 3-2 win over No. 15 NC State.

Zach Ramsey put the Huskies ahead 1-0 with an unassisted goal in the 44th minute. Joe Dale’s goal in the 62nd minute made the score 2-0, but the Wolfpack got goals in the 66th and 87th minutes to tie the score.

Bertos’ golden goal was his second goal in six postseason games this season and the fifth score of his junior year.

The Huskies’ journey to the title game consisted of games at Oregon State, No. 5 SMU, No. 12 Stanford and No. 4 Maryland before a College Cup semifinal win over No. 16 Furman in Cary, N.C. Washington became the second team to make the College Cup after four road victories (University of Maryland, Baltimore County did so in 2014).

The Huskies’ postseason nearly ended after one game. In the first round, they trailed Oregon State 2-1 before Connor Lofy’s unassisted goal in the 85th minute led to overtime. Washington scored the winner in the 104th minute.

Washington was playing for the national title for the second time, both coming in the last five seasons. In 2021, Clemson defeated the Huskies 2-0 in the championship game.
