Horace Burrowes

Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) president Horace Burrowes is set to resign from office on Friday, bringing an abrupt end to a turbulent second term at the helm of the federation, following last week’s decisive ruling by the International Cycling Union (UCI) which voided the GCF’s controversial attempts earlier this year to ban Mark St Claire, Linden Dowridge and Andrew Arjoon.

Burrowes made the disclosure during a virtual “emergency meeting” held last evening, which, according to sources who attended and spoke on condition of anonymity, was largely centred on his impending resignation and the immediate way forward for the embattled federation. The announcement comes amid mounting pressure on the GCF leadership, with local cycling administration again under intense scrutiny both regionally and internationally.

However, concerns have already been raised within the cycling fraternity about what may follow Burrowes’ departure. Several administrators closely involved in the sport have privately expressed fears that the outgoing president may attempt to influence the succession process by pushing a controversial replacement (name withheld) from his own club, United We Stand, a move that could further inflame tensions within the federation.
