Meryl Streep and Martin Short want to take the next step and get hitched, but her divorce to Don Gummer is still dragging on — now, a source tells Globe that it’s giving them cause for major stress heading into 2026.
“Martin is getting impatient,” the source says. “He’s so gaga for Meryl, and he’s a very old-fashioned guy. He wants them to get married and live together. Meryl says she wants to marry him too, but she hasn’t made getting her divorce finalized a priority.”
The source adds that Streep’s ex is “dragging his feet” and the Devil Wears Prada star, 76, “doesn’t want to press it.”
“The whole thing is a delicate balance because she does want to remain close to him,” the source continues. “They have their kids and grandkids. They’re family and she doesn’t want to hurt him or upset her kids.”
Streep and Gummer were married from 1978 until they announced their separation after 45 years of marriage in 2023. During their time together, they welcomed son Henry and daughters Mamie, Grace and Louisa.

“Martin has been understanding, and he has no issue with her being friends with her ex-husband, he supports that, but he doesn’t see why they still need to be married on paper,” the source explains. “That bothers him, not to mention it’s holding up all his plans.”
“He is full of excitement and has this whole dream wedding he’s got in mind for them,” the source adds, “but until she gets this sorted out, they’re stuck in limbo.”
