According to prominent Weibo leaker ‘Digital Chat Station’ known for accurate leaks, Apple’s first foldable model is expected to debut in 2026 as part of the next major iPhone lineup, and will will arrive alongside the iPhone 18 series (via MacRumors).
Unlike existing foldable phones that often exhibit a noticeable crease down the center of the internal screen, Apple is said to have made significant progress in minimizing that line to the point where it may be nearly invisible.
In terms of design and build, the foldable iPhone is said to adopt a “book style” form factor, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup, rather than a clamshell flip model. Reports suggest the frame could combine premium materials like titanium and stainless steel to balance durability and weight.
The leaker claims that the inner display will measure around 7.8 inches when fully unfolded, giving users a large canvas similar in size to small tablets, while the outer screen will likely be about 5.5 inches, providing a more traditional phone experience when folded up. Experts believe Apple is using advanced display materials and a carefully engineered hinge system to achieve this display effect.
Unlike most competitors, Apple is reportedly prioritizing a smooth, crease-free look above all else, even if it means higher production costs or more complex manufacturing steps. Analysts also note that Apple’s display partner for this project continues to be Samsung Display, which has produced many of the foldable panels used in Android devices and may help Apple accelerate its schedule.
Further rumors indicate Apple might replace its usual Face ID system with Touch ID integrated into the side button due to limited space inside the folding chassis.
Battery capacity is another focus of the rumors, with one industry report suggesting Apple may use larger, high density cells that could make the foldable iPhone one of the longest lasting Apple devices in terms of power life. That would be crucial for a device with two large screens to keep users satisfied throughout the day.
Camera and internal hardware details have also leaked. Early reports point to a high resolution under-display camera on the interior screen, possibly around 24 megapixels, which would be a notable improvement over most foldables that use low resolution under-screen cameras. The rear camera system is expected to feature multiple lenses, though the exact configuration remains unconfirmed.
Even with all the leaks, not everything is settled. Some analysts caution that Apple’s foldable project has seen delays in the past, and changes to the timeline remain possible. There have been conflicting reports about whether manufacturing will start in the second half of 2026 or slip further.
