The 32-year-old Markham, Ont. native is coming off consecutive seasons where he struggled, but was previously a two-time all-star closer for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Romano pitched to an 8.23 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 17 walks over 42.2 innings with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2025 before his season was cut short due to right middle finger inflammation.

The hard-throwing righty joined the Phillies last off-season on a one-year, $8.5 million deal after spending the first six years of his career with the Blue Jays.

He ranked fourth among relief pitchers in saves from 2021-23, but dealt with a bevy of elbow issues in his final season in Toronto. Romano wound up making only 15 appearances in 2024 and was non-tendered by the Blue Jays the following off-season.

Romano joins a list off Angels off-season acquisitions that includes 38-year-old former closer Kenley Jansen, former Baltimore Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez and former Blue Jay Alek Manoah.
