Shortstop Wandy Asigen, one of the top prospects in the 2026 international class, is set to sign with a different team when the international signing period opens on Jan. 15.

Asigen, who previously was going to sign with the Yankees, is now set to sign with the Mets for a bonus expected to be around $3.8 million. Asigen, 16, is a 6-foot, 175-pound lefthanded hitter who has represented the Dominican Republic during international tournaments and has a promixing mix of quick-twitch athleticism, bat speed and power.

Players typically reach agreements to sign with teams several years in advance of when they are officially eligible to sign, so a player of Asigen’s caliber switching teams this late in the process is unusual.

Signing Asigen would give the Mets two straight years signing one of the premier players in the Dominican Republic. When the 2025 signing period opened this year on Jan. 15, the Mets signed shortstop Elian Peña, who as a 17-year-old hit .292/.41/.528 with nine home runs in 223 plate appearances in the Dominican Summer League.
