Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes took a subtle shot at the Vancouver Canucks in a recent interview with the media discussing the team’s practice facility.

The lack of a practice facility hasn’t helped the organization in their recruitment, or retention, of players and staff in recent times, with Rick Tocchet even saying it played a role in his departure from the Vancouver Canucks in the spring.

“Yeah I mean it’s a great facility and I’m looking forward to nothing being new. Just like not knowing where to go and where to park and where the entrance is an all of that stuff, but yeah, it’s a beautiful facility for sure.” Hughes said.

As of December 2025, the Vancouver Canucks are the only team in the National Hockey League that either doesn’t have a practice facility or concrete plans to build one within the coming years and it’s not a great look for the organization.

Yeah, it’s nice that they’re able to use Rogers Arena or the UBC rink for practices, but it’s not ideal and as mentioned, without a dedicated practice/training facility, combined with the fact that the club is not performing on the ice and heading towards a rebuild, it’s going to hurt their chances of landing a big free agent or getting a player to waive their no-trade clause to come to Vancouver.

Getting a practice facility built within the next two-to-three years needs to be a priority for this organization and with the search for one now going on for a decade or more, it’s time for Francesco Aquilini to find a location, write the cheque and get shovels in the ground.
