Darlington community mourns loss of NASCAR champion Greg Biffle

  • December 20, 2025

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) – Fans across the Darlington community are reeling from the shocking news of the loss of Greg Biffle and his family.

Biffle was known for his work both on and off the track. NASCAR fans are feeling the loss of a driver who was recognized as one of NASCAR’s greatest competitors and as a humanitarian.

“Greg’s loss is gonna be impactful for the NASCAR community for a long time,” said Josh Harris, president of Darlington Raceway.

His work during Hurricane Helene set him apart in the eyes of people in Darlington, which is why this tragedy is hitting so close to home.

“As much as he was, I mean, all his wins, all his championships, and he helped out after the hurricane in North Carolina like just him as a person, him helping out, and always being in the spotlight is going to be a true loss for NASCAR,” said Savannah Smith, a Darlington resident.

Before he retired from full-time racing in 2016, Biffle won 19 NASCAR Cup Series races.

Two of those races were at Darlington Raceway, winning back-to-back years at the track.

“It’s a big impact, I mean, anytime you lose a brother in a sport, it’s a tragedy for anybody,” said Wayne Hucks, a NASCAR fan. “You know, any race fan out there could tell you look up to Biffle, and it’s just a tragedy.”

During the Goodyear 400 weekend, NASCAR hosts an alumni program that allows former competitors to participate.

This year, they had an area for all the racers to gather. Harris was able to talk with Biffle and learn what he was like.

“I just remember spending some time together with him while in that room with him, and just talking to him, getting to know him,” Harris said. “Hearing about all the things he was doing away from the racetrack, and how much that meant to him to be able to give back to people because he was very fortunate in his life and the things he was able to accomplish in his career on the racetrack, and then turn around and put it to use away from the racetrack.”

Harris adds that Biffle was one of a kind, and his loss will be felt throughout the community for many years to come.
