WNBA guard Sophie Cunningham has gone viral after a candid, off-the-cuff exchange about her financial future sparked conversation well beyond basketball.
During a recent appearance on Sundae Conversation with Caleb Pressley on Sunday, December 21, Cunningham addressed free agency, league pay, and a hypothetical backup plan, including a brief but pointed mention of OnlyFans.
The moment came when host Caleb Pressley asked Cunningham about her current situation in the WNBA.
Cunningham, now a free agent, didn’t sugarcoat the reality of league salaries. When asked if she was getting paid, she replied plainly, “You know, barely, but we’re still surviving.”
From there, Pressley floated the idea of a “Plan B” if things didn’t work out professionally.
Cunningham quickly reframed the idea, correcting him with a smile: “Not Plan B. Project B.”
The phrasing alone lit up social media, but the conversation didn’t stop there. When Pressley jokingly asked whether her hypothetical backup plan involved foreign investment, Cunningham shut that down just as quickly. “No Saudi money involved,” she said, adding that she didn’t think Saudi Arabia was interested in paying women athletes millions.
Pressley then raised the possibility of Cunningham making money independently through OnlyFans, a platform increasingly discussed by athletes and creators alike.
Cunningham didn’t dismiss the idea outright, but she emphasized the role professional leagues play in building visibility. “No, I think you do need the leagues,” she said, explaining that organized sports provide the fan base and exposure that make individual platforms viable in the first place.
At the same time, Cunningham acknowledged the power of direct-to-consumer platforms. “OnlyFans can be a platform in themselves,” she noted, before adding, “Maybe Project B should support that platform.”
While Cunningham didn’t announce any concrete plans to launch an OnlyFans account, her remarks struck a chord amid debates about WNBA pay, athlete branding, and financial sustainability.
