Google could be planning to bring a toned-down, more generalized version of the Pixel 10-limited Magic Cue to other Android devices.
According to Android Authority, Google is working on something called Contextual Suggestions, which supposedly offer “helpful suggestions from apps and services based on their routine activities and locations.” One example is your usual workout playlist in your usual music app, automatically booting up when you get to the gym.
The feature uses Google Play Services and has already started showing up for users with the app version 25.49.32 beta. If you want to try and activate it, it can be found under Settings > Google Services > All services > others.
It isn’t available for everyone yet, so Google is most likely selectively rolling it out to specific users before a wider mass rollout.
Another example is that if you use your phone to listen to a study playlist at roughly the same time every night, it will automatically suggest the playlist at that time. Another example Google added, according to Android Authority, is that if you cast sports from your phone to a TV screen at a particular time each week (e.g., Monday Night Football), your phone will automatically suggest casting at that time each week.
If you have the feature enabled, it is expected that your phone will analyze your usage patterns to help achieve similar results with fewer steps. There is a mention of AI, but it is unclear whether that limits the feature to devices with sufficient hardware to run the model locally.
The good news is that this feature is optional and can be turned off. The good news is that all processing happens locally on the device, in what is described as an “encrypted space,” so there shouldn’t be much concern over privacy.
