Snow and freezing rain could affect morning commutes on Tuesday, according to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada.

Toronto can expect between five and ten centimetres of snow with a risk of freezing rain Tuesday morning, according to the statement.

The weather will affect areas along and north of Hwy. 401, where temperatures are below zero, according to David Rodgers, lead meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“The roads will probably be slow because it will take road crews a little bit of time to clean up the snow that fell through the night,” said Rodgers.

Roads and walkways may be icy and slippery, and the ice could be difficult to see, Environment Canada said in its weather statement.

The weather is causing several transit routes to be delayed, according to service alerts from the TTC. Commuters should check their route before heading out the door.

The snow is expected to let up and turn to rain later Friday morning and to end sometime midday, the alert said.

Environment Canada said the snowfall and freezing rain could impact rush hour traffic and said drivers should prepare for “quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”

“If you have to head out and and go to work, it’s going to be a slow commute,” Rodgers said. “Allow a little extra time and be patient with your driving.”
