For one woman and her mother, a journey through the local healthcare system revealed a community that remains full of compassion, respect and genuine concern for others

SooToday received this letter about everyday acts of kindness experienced during a family medical journey in Sault Ste. Marie.

I recently had the opportunity to read Mr. Peter Vaudry’s new book entitled Kindness is Sault Ste. Marie. Written in true Mr. Vaudry style, it is an easy-to-follow format with clear intention and purpose. A fantastic read, which I would recommend to everyone.

Over the last month, my mom has had some health concerns. We have spent time in the ER twice, with EMTs, Group Health, LifeLabs and SAH to see a specialist. All of the medical professionals treated my mom with courtesy, kindness and respect.

I would like to say, despite my mom’s health, it was an experience that taught me that kindness is indeed still a hallmark of our city.

The ER team at SAH was overwhelmed, yet wonderful. We also met some kind folks while waiting in the ER. One particular night, we chatted like old friends for hours, which took my mom’s mind off the pain and helped to pass the time.

I also noticed that everywhere we went, Saultites offered to help me with the wheelchair or helped my mom while I ran to pull the vehicle up close for her. They held doors and smiled, or helped my mom walk with her cane. Everyone we came to meet was kind and happy to offer assistance.

My mom’s neighbours all asked about her with genuine concern. While I needed to stay with her, my neighbour cleared my driveway and shoveled off my steps.

My work team covered the shifts I needed to miss, welcomed me back and expressed concern for my mom and me.

A shout-out goes to Tyler the EMT, and Dr. Aziz and his wonderful and caring team at SAH.

What is the shortest distance between two people? A smile.

Happy holidays.
