MSU men’s soccer: a 2025 season recap

  • December 26, 2025

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – As 2025 winds down, one of the year’s most memorable sports stories belongs to the Midwestern State University’s men’s soccer program.

The Mustangs capped a historic season by winning the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer National Championship, their first team national title in Midwestern State University history.

MSU’s run began with a regular season conference championship, earning the top seed in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Mustangs followed by shutting out UT Tyler and Lubbock Christian to claim the conference tournament title, showcasing resilience throughout the postseason.

That momentum carried into the NCAA Division II tournament, where the Mustangs continued to play with confidence. After a quarterfinal victory over Point Loma, MSU moved within two wins of a national championship.

While the team was briefly back home, head coach Michael Meachum spoke about his players’ mindset.

The guys came here to compete at the highest levels they can,” Meachum said. “They came in to ultimately win trophies and put themselves on a stage where they can perform and showcase their abilities. For us to be knocking on the door of what teams have done in the past is awesome.

Graduate student Davis Mays said the moment carried special meaning.

“It means the world, especially with my career,” Mays said. “This is the farthest I’ve ever been, and maybe this is my last season. Going out on a good note would be special.”

Reaching the Final Four marked the deepest postseason run in program history, matching that of the team that fell to Rollins in 2010. On Dec. 12, the Mustangs took another step forward, defeating Southern New Hampshire 3-0.

That victory set up a championship rematch with Rollins. With the pressure at its highest, MSU delivered, defeating Rollins 2-0 to claim the national title.

The championship marked Midwestern State’s first team national championship in any sport. The following day, fans, family members and supporters gathered to welcome the team home.

Athletic Director Kyle Williams reflected on the milestone.

Midwestern State University now has its first national championship. We’re proud of men’s soccer and the people who have gone before them. 53 years of soccer laid the groundwork for this moment. It is a special group, and it is something we will always remember.

2025 held many notable moments in sports, but for Midwestern State, few were more meaningful than bringing home the program’s first team national championship — a long-awaited achievement that capped a season to remember.
