The San Francisco Giants have added veteran left-hander Nick Margevicius to the organization on a minor league contract, a move first reported by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic. The deal includes a non-roster invitation to Major League Spring Training, giving Margevicius a chance to compete for a role as the Giants continue to sort through their pitching depth ahead of the 2026 season.

Margevicius, 29, is attempting another comeback after several winding years away from the Major Leagues. His last appearance at the MLB level came in 2021, when he made five outings for the Seattle Mariners before his season was derailed by thoracic outlet syndrome, a serious condition that has ended or altered the careers of numerous pitchers. The injury forced Margevicius into a lengthy rehab process and ultimately stalled what had once looked like a promising early-career trajectory.

Following his surgery and recovery, Margevicius spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons bouncing between minor league affiliates in the Seattle and Atlanta organizations. While he was able to take the mound consistently during that stretch, a return to the big leagues never materialized. Seeking regular work and an opportunity to rebuild his value, the left-hander went overseas in 2024, pitching for the TSG Hawks in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

Margevicius returned to North America in 2025, beginning the season in the Mexican League before later signing a minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers. Although he did not receive a call-up with Detroit, his performance was evidently enough to draw interest from San Francisco, which is known for taking low-risk flyers on pitchers with past big league experience.

For the Giants, Margevicius likely profiles as organizational depth entering camp. He could factor in as a potential spot starter or long-relief option if injuries arise, though he may ultimately open the season at Triple-A Sacramento. San Francisco’s competition for the back end of the rotation features several younger arms with limited MLB résumés, and while Margevicius has appeared in 32 big league games between the Padres and Mariners from 2019 to 2021, that experience is now several years removed.

Still, as a non-roster invitee, Margevicius represents a low-cost, low-commitment addition for the Giants one that could pay off if he shows signs of recapturing his pre-injury form this spring.
