Steve Sullivan, a former NHLer who is from Timmins, Ont., has been hired as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

According to TSN, Sullivan, 51, joins the Leafs after serving as an assistant on the Toronto Marlies coaching staff for the past two seasons under John Gruden.

Prior to his time in Toronto, Sullivan worked in the Arizona Coyotes’ organization in a number of roles, including assistant general manager, director of player development, and executive vice-president of hockey operations.

He was promoted as the team’s interim general manager in July 2020, before ceding the role to Bill Armstrong in September of that year.

The Timmins native played in the NHL for 16 seasons, totalling 290 goals and 747 points across 1,011 career games spent with the New Jersey Devils, Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Coyotes.

Sullivan joins the team after another assistant, Marc Savard, was fired last week.

He now joins a Maple Leafs staff that will look to turn the team’s season around following a 16-15-5 start to the year. Toronto sits in last place in the Atlantic Division with 37 points from 36 games.
