Despite the arrival of the holidays, the Canadian Football League’s offseason rolled on.

On Christmas Eve, Rider Nation received an early gift when receiver and Grey Cup Most Outstanding Canadian Samuel Emilus agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Then on Saturday, the Ottawa Redblacks picked up American Linebacker Nyles Morgan from Edmonton in exchange for a pair of third-round draft picks.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, the football operations department continued to transform under the guidance of advisory John Hufnagel. The 74-year-old’s hiring by the Boatmen still has some scratching their heads, but not Roughriders offensive coordinator Marc Mueller.

“If it’s something he wants to do, I think he’s still excellent at it, and it’s awesome that he gets to go do it. Talk about an unbelievable run in Calgary. We’re in a sport where you talk about if you have a five-year run at one place, that it’s a long time. And he was there for almost 20 years. I’m forever grateful I got in there right in the middle of it. And without Huff, I guess I’d probably still be selling beer. And that was a pretty fun job, but football’s just the one thing ahead of it for me. But I’m excited for Huff. I’m excited for another new opportunity for him. And it’s good to see him, and I get to see him at all the league events, which is always nice.”
