‘Our first electric arc furnace has successfully produced steel and is now in the commissioning and ramp-up phase’
SooToday has heard from readers asking if Algoma Steel’s electric arc furnace is still operational after it was officially used to create steel earlier this month.
Laura Devoni, the company’s vice-president of human resources and corporate affairs, confirmed the furnace is working, but it isn’t being used all the time.Â
“Our first electric arc furnace has successfully produced steel and is now in the commissioning and ramp-up phase,” Devoni said by email.
“During this phase it is not operating on a continuous or daily basis; however, it is operational and progressing steadily toward full commercial operation in line with the ramp up plan.
“Construction of our second EAF remains on schedule.”
Algoma’s $880-million transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking has been the most costly building project in the city since building permits were issued.Â
