Sault Police say they thwarted a group of not-so-smart thieves at the scene of downtown break-in early Boxing Day morning.

It all began around 6:30 a.m., when someone phoned 911 to report a break-and-enter at a business in the 100 block of Queen Street East.

When officers arrived, they discovered damage to the property — and a vehicle in the parking lot.

“While officers waited with the vehicle — which was believed to have been left behind by the suspects — the first accused approached and requested to retrieve items from the vehicle,” says a news release issued this morning by Sault Police.

The suspect was arrested.

An investigation revealed two other suspects had broken into the business and stolen merchandise before fleeing the scene, police say.

“While officers were investigating, the second accused attempted to retrieve the vehicle they had left behind,” the news release continues. “They were arrested. The third accused also returned to the scene and then ran away from officers. Despite resistance, they were arrested.”
