Officials in Calgary say there has been a significant water-main break in the city’s northwest, in the area of the Sarcee Trail and 16 Avenue Northwest interchange.

The City of Calgary says about 2,000 homes and 100 businesses have been impacted by the water main break in the community of Bowness.

Following an initial probe, authorities say they believe the break is related to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main – infamous for a significant rupture in June 2024 that caused an extended outage.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas has been offering updates on his social media account. He says a boil water order is in effect for portions of Montgomery and Parkdale, as well as Point McKay Communities.

He also noted that the city is activating its Stage 4 Water Restrictions to manage the water supply. Emergency crews are continuing to assess the cause of the break and the extent of the damage.

Mayor Farkas thanked the Calgary Fire Department for its service after crews rescued 13 people from cars stuck in freezing water. He also suggested a morning news conference would be coming.

The Calgary Police Service and fire crews remain on scene, directing traffic.
