As 2025 comes to a close, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on just how special this year was for sports in Saskatchewan. From championships to defining moments, it was a year that reminded us why this province cares so deeply about its teams.
The headline, without question, was the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Five Grey Cups—still hard to believe. The Riders’ 25–17 win over Montreal in the 112th Grey Cup put them back on top of the CFL, with plenty of Saskatchewan talent playing key roles. The moment that stands out most, though, wasn’t the final in Winnipeg, but that last, pressure-packed drive in the West Final. Trevor Harris calmly leading the charge was the kind of drama Mosaic Stadium had been waiting for, and seeing Rider fans celebrate another title—on enemy turf—felt long overdue.
On the ice the Pat Canadians delivered a season for the ages. Their fifth Telus Cup came with a dramatic overtime win over Lévis, capped by Maddox Schultz’s winner just 28 seconds into extra time. Add in the sweep of provincial, regional, and national titles, plus the now-famous blonde hair, and it’s a run that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
One of the year’s biggest hockey stories happened off the ice, with Regina Pats forward Braxton Whitehead committing to Arizona State. It was a landmark moment that signalled real change in the relationship between the CHL and NCAA, opening doors for players across the country.
Even non-baseball fans were pulled in by the Toronto Blue Jays. Their playoff run and World Series showdown with the Dodgers provided unforgettable moments, including that strange ball-stuck-in-the-wall finish that will live in baseball lore. Game seven didn’t end the way Canada hoped, but the journey was pure theatre.
And finally, a true community story: Fort Knox capturing their first-ever PJHL championship. Beating the Saskatoon Westleys to claim that first banner was decades in the making and a reminder of how much these moments mean at the grassroots level.
From Grey Cups to community rinks, 2025 delivered in a big way. Thanks for being part of the ride, and from all of us: Happy New Year.
