Okay, I get it. Six, seven is the big thing with the kids these days. But in CFL contract negotiations, it’s becoming one, two. That is whether contract lengths should be one or two years.

I get it, six-seven is the big thing with the kids these days, but in CFL contract negotiations, it is becoming one-two. That is, whether contract lengths should be one or two years.

For example, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed receiver Samuel Emilus to a two-year contract extension, and we are increasingly seeing teams and athletes across the league move away from one-year deals.

TSN’s Glen Suitor told the SportsCage that there is some logic to that trend.

“I think this is where the one-year contracts catch up to players, and they don’t really realize it. They always think that if I have a big year, I’ll be able to cash in the next year because I’ll be a free agent every season and every offseason. So the problem is that there are 24 guys, and any one of them can help your team win. I mean, I can go through all the names, and you’ll be going, Oh, I like that guy. So, it all of a sudden backfires on them that there’s that many free agents available because now the GMs can sort of say, well, look, we’ll give you a little bump, but it’s not going to be too much because if you decide to go to BC, there’s a nice list of free agents. We just pick up the phone and start calling them when we’re allowed.”
