The Region of Durham says a lack of rain and increased water demand during extreme heat is straining their water system.

They’ve put in place mandatory water restrictions for northern Durham along with parts of Clarington and Greenbank.

The restrictions are in effect for Beaverton, Cannington, Sunderland, Uxbridge, Port Perry, Blackstock, Orono and Greenbank.

Residents and businesses need to stop all non-essential water use until further notice so the region can ensure there is enough water for emergencies. Some examples of non-essential water use include washing your car, cleaning your driveway or watering your lawn.

The same restrictions are currently in effect for Bowmanville due to a maintenance issue with one of the three filters at the water treatment plant, but the region says these new restrictions are not related.
