Denny Hamlin has addressed his father’s passing for the first time. The NASCAR driver lost his dad toward the end of December, shortly after reports of a fire at his parents’ home.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences on my father’s passing,” Hamlin wrote on social media.
Fortunately for Hamlin, his mother, Mary Lou, who was also present during the house fire, is reportedly making progress in her recovery. According to TMZ, she suffered “critical injuries” during the incident.
“My mother continues to improve, and our family truly appreciates the outpouring of support and the respect for our privacy during this time,” Denny continued.
According to the  Gaston County Emergency Management and Fire Services in North Carolina, Dennis Hamlin also suffered severe injuries as he tried to escape the flames.
“Both suffered catastrophic injuries while escaping the flames,” TMZ reported authorities as saying.
Tragically, Dennis passed away while being treated at the hospital.
Denny Hamlin’s Dad Was Battling a Serious Illness
Earlier in 2025, Denny had revealed that his father was battling a serious illness and likely had less than twelve months to live. He also noted that he would use what he had left with his dad to help spur him toward success in his NASCAR career.
“Obviously, my dad has been a huge fan of mine,” Hamlin said. “…Realistically, I know this is his last chance to get to see it if it does happen. They’re the ones that made the sacrifices, ultimately. I’m the one who said, ‘This is what I want to do,’ and they just had to figure out what all were they willing to sacrifice to make that happen. This is the chance. If we’re going to do it and he’s going to see it, it’s going to have to happen now.”
Denny fell short of his goal this year.
The cause of the house fire is still under investigation. However, the events certainly shortened Denny’s time with his father. Still, he can still strive for success on the race track, knowing that he can still make his father proud.
