Vancouver has cracked another global ranking, and this time, 604 is at the very top of the list of the most sustainable cities.

Forbes recently published a list of the most sustainable cities on the planet, and Vancouver beat out several notably green cities as well as other Canadian spots.

“These global cities are leading the charge when it comes to prioritizing sustainability and urban living with things like renewable energy, ample green space, and reliable public transportation,” Forbes said of the ranking.

“As cities around the world face growing pressure to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and support healthier lifestyles, sustainability has become one of the most important factors for many travellers when planning their next trip,” Forbes adds.

The ranking comes from Reinders Corporation, which Forbes calls a climate solutions company.

Each city on Forbes’ list received a Green City Index score based on six specific indicators, including green space availability, renewable energy usage, air pollution, public transportation efficiency, and bikeability.

Vancouver’s Green City Index score was 101.71.

“Vancouver earned top spot thanks to its balance of environmental responsibility and urban livability. The city boasts 119 square meters of green space per capita, while nearly all of the energy (98 per cent) comes from renewable sources,” the blurb about Vancouver says.

Vancouver narrowly beat out Oslo, Norway, which has a Green City Index score of 100.57.

Forbes highlighted that the other top cities were from Europe, including Munich, Stockholm and Zurich.

Toronto and Montreal also cracked the list.
